Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary Neonatal Unit

At Grosvenor Interiors, we are proud to have partnered with the Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary Neonatal Unit and the Tiny Lives Trust to enhance key areas.

The unit that supports over 750 premature or poorly babies and their families every year.

Our Brief

Working closely with clinical teams, the charity, and the diverse community the unit serves, our brief was simple yet deeply meaningful:
to create a calming, homely environment that supports parents through some of the toughest moments of their lives.

Our team delivered a thoughtful, nature?inspired design.  This covered areas across the Intensive Care areas, HDU corridors, counselling spaces and expressing rooms. Gentle watercolour themes, calming foliage and clear, accessible wayfinding help reduce stress and create a sense of welcome for families navigating long and emotionally challenging stays.

We also introduced interactive features such as the Tree of Knowledge.  This now provides families with quick access to essential resources via scannable learning tools that can be updated easily by staff.

Alongside these environmental improvements, the project celebrated the creativity and compassion of the clinical team. Artwork commissioned through the Tiny Lives Trust, soft focus florals and uplifting phrasing chosen by staff now offer reassurance and moments of emotional comfort throughout the unit.

Graduation Board

A particularly joyful addition has been the new Graduation Board, a staff led initiative brought to life by Senior Sister Emma Carmichael. Emma not only developed the original sketch for the feature but has since created a dedicated Graduation Craft Pack. The packs is enabling parents to make a tiny graduation cap for their baby to wear in front of the board. This sits within a wider Craft Club, created by a small group of staff and funded by Tiny Lives, offering families creative outlets during what can be an overwhelming time.

The Graduation Board has quickly become one of the most positive and popular aspects of the unit.  The board is now providing families with a moment of celebration and pride as their baby progresses. Emma has witnessed first hand its emotional impact, capturing many stories and images.

Commitment to designing healthcare spaces

This project reflects our shared commitment to designing healthcare spaces.  These spaces are not only functional, but also compassionate, inclusive and emotionally supportive.
We are honoured to contribute to environments that truly make a difference.
